Bahrain’s Al Ahli Club were eliminated from further title contention last night in the second West Asian Men‘s Clubs Volleyball Championship, currently being held in Muscat.
The Kingdom’s representatives came up narrowly short in their bid for a place in the gold medal game after losing their semi-final contest to defending champions Al Rayyan of Qatar in four sets.
The Bahrainis battled valiantly over the opening three frames yesterday but eventually succumbed to their opponents, who were spearheaded by foreign talent, with a 1-3 (20-25, 25-27, 25-22, 15-25) score line.
Ahli will now play for the bronze medals in the competition today against Al Arabi of Qatar.
That game is scheduled for a 3pm start, Bahrain time.
The gold medals will be contested between Rayyan and Kuwait SC of Kuwait, with the tournament final scheduled for 5pm, also Bahrain.
The Kuwaitis defeated Arabi in yesterday’s other final four contest 3-2 (25- 23, 19-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13).
Both matches today will wrap up the tournament’s action, and they will be followed by the official closing ceremony and prize presentation.
In last night’s game, Ahli’s Bahrain national team star Ali Ebrahim scored a team-high 26 points but it was not enough to spearhead his side to the win.
Also playing key roles were fellow-international Nasser Anan, Montenegro professional Marko Vukasinovic, and other top talents Sayed Mohammed Al Abrar, Mahmoud Abdulhussain, Mohammed Habib, Hussain Al Haiki, and Mahmood Al Afia, among others.
