American youngster upsets girls’ singles third seed in second Bahrain ITF Juniors Championship 2024

Ava Khalil of the US upset third seed Alina Sogomonyan of Armenia in straight sets yesterday to advance to the girls’ singles quarter-finals in the second Bahrain International Tennis Federation (ITF) Juniors Championship 2024, currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation courts in Isa Town.
Ava overcame a tough challenge from her rival to win 7-5, 6-3 and set up a meeting in the next round with Alisa Grinkevich.Alisa needed three sets to take down another seeded player in Irina Khayndrava. Alisa battled back from an early deficit to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Also advancing yesterday amongst the girls were second seed Yelena Lebeau of France, who will next face eighth seed Samira Rashidova.
Veronika Koutova of the Czech Republic will take on sixth seed Luisa Fusil of Slovenia in the last eight, while fifth-seeded wild card Haniya Aman Minhas of Pakistan will face Romania’s Ioana Stefania Boian, who won a title double in the previous ITF event in the Kingdom last week.
Meanwhile, in the boys’ singles, top seed Eyad Reda Ezzat Mohamed Sherif of Egypt defeated Hartmut Fiedler of Austria 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to punch his ticket into the quarters.
There, he will take on fifth seed Rafael Asadullin, who beat Mustafa Eren Elmas of Turkey 6-0, 7-5 yesterday.
Third seed Ilya Mosolkin also made it through and will face Kirill Kalennik in the last eight, while fourth seed Nikoloz Gurgenidze of Georgia will take on sixth seed Dev Kanbargimath of Romania.
The last match-up in the round of eight will be between the Turkish pair of Utku Kerem Biberli and seventh seed Ramazan Kaan Oktay, who, like Ioana, won the two titles amongst the boys in last week’s ITF event.
In the girls’ doubles, Ioana and compatriot Simona Cucu will be facing top seeds Viktoria Egorova and Samira in the semi-finals, while second seeds Yelena and Luisa will play fourth seeds Alisa and Milana Konovalova.
In the boys’ doubles, second seeds Asadullin and Mosolkin have made it through to the last four, where they will square off with fourth seeds Sherif and Oscar Reilly of the Netherlands.
The tournament is a part of this year’s ITF World Juniors Tennis Tour Calendar. It is a J30 event, signifying the number of ranking points that will be claimed by the singles winners.
