Bahrain lead GCC men’s golf after first round

Bahrain rose to the top of the leaderboard after the first day of play in the 26th GCC Men’s Golf Championship, currently being played at Doha Golf Club in Qatar.
The Kingdom’s senior men’s national team are competing in the tournament with a quartet of Ahmed Al Zayed, Khalifa Duaij Alkaabi, Ali Alkowari and Khalifa Al Meraisi.
They carded a team total of 235 for 19 over par. Alkaabi was their top performer with a 77 total, while Alkowari played a 78.
Al Meraisi followed with an 80 and Al Zayed scored an 83.
The Bahrainis were four shots ahead of the UAE and Saudi Arabia after the first 18 holes. Both the Emiratis and Saudis were 23-shots-over with 239 team totals.
Also taking place this week at the Qatari capital is the 15th GCC Youth Golf Championship. Bahrain were ranked third after the first day, 30 shots behind leaders the UAE.
Oman were second, 14 shots from the Emiratis. The Kingdom’s youth team features Abdulrahman Mehaizea, Yacoob Majid, and Khalid Shah.
Abdulrahman carded an 89 score on day one, Khalid a 95 and Yacoob a 99.
The men’s tournament is being played over 72 holes while the juniors’ event, for under-18 golfers, is being contested over 54 holes.
The Bahraini delegation in Doha is headed by Bahrain Golf Association official Adel Alfayyadh and national team head coach Gabriel Sota.
