According to BMW, most M5 owners are unlikely to ever push their car to its limits on a race track. BMW has noted that the vast majority of M5 owners never take their cars to a track, though some do visit at least once. Daniela Schmid, BMW M5 product manager, explained to a news outlet, "For M5 customers, we know there is a very small percentage of people who only drive on the circuit once. Continuously... I'd say hardly anyone does."
Schmid emphasized that it's important for the brand that any M model can be driven on a track. However, she acknowledged that these cars are also likely to be driven daily. She mentioned, "If there are customers who want that, they can do it without problems, but that potential is also available to them when they drive the car every day. For this reason, we still maintain the requirement that the car can be used on the circuit, although we are aware that not many customers do this."
The news outlet also reported that the typical buyer demographic for the M5 is middle-aged men. Responding to this, Schmid stated, "The current buyer profile is that of a middle-aged man, although we also have female customers—most of them are men, entrepreneurs, or high-management individuals who have experience with other M models, like the M3 or M4, and desire an M5 as they get older." However, she noted that the average age of buyers in Asian markets has decreased.
She explained, "In Asia, there is an interesting shift. There are many young people in IT and software with a lot of money from a relatively young age. Many have been to the US or Europe, where they got acquainted with the M range, and now they want to buy such a car in their country."
