General Motors has teamed up with tech giant Google to integrate built-in Google software into the infotainment systems of several of its vehicles, including the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban SUVs. However, a global media outlet conducting a long-term test of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 discovered that owners of GM vehicles will need to pay a subscription fee to access certain Google software features.
This includes basic functionalities like the Google Play Store, voice recognition, and, most notably, Google Maps. The media outlet reported that to use the vehicle’s native navigation system (Google Maps), owners must have an active OnStar plan. The OnStar service starts with the Connected Vehicle Plan at $24.99 per month, while their all-inclusive Premium plan is priced at $49.99 per month. Currently, GM vehicles still offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
However, the carmaker announced last year that it plans to phase out these features and replace them with its own in-house developed connectivity platform.
