Angelina Jolie, 49, is embracing her age and the transformative power of opera through her portrayal of the legendary soprano Maria Callas in the upcoming biographical drama film Maria. In a candid interview with IndieWire, the Academy Award-winning actress opened up about how her role resonates with her own life experience.

"I'm 49. I do feel like an older woman now, and I embrace that," Jolie shared, reflecting on how certain aspects of the film echo her personal journey. She spoke about the emotional connection she’s found with opera music, which she wasn’t deeply familiar with prior to filming. "When I was younger, there were certain pieces of music that matched what I was feeling—falling in love or being curious. But opera is different. It’s bigger than what we allow ourselves to feel in every moment," Jolie explained.

Growing up in Los Angeles, Jolie admitted she hadn’t been exposed to opera as much as in other parts of the world, where it’s more ingrained in the culture. "In other countries, they understand how essential and important it is," she said. Her role as Maria Callas opened up a new world of opera to her, allowing her to explore the depth and grandeur of the art form.

Jolie hopes that viewers will engage with the film on a similarly emotional level. "I hope people go into a discovery with the film, let themselves feel it, and even try to sing it," she said. Her preparation for the role involved seven months of intensive opera training, Italian language lessons, and vocal support. Jolie revealed during the Telluride Film Festival how these efforts helped her immerse herself in Callas' world, with the help of a dedicated team of instructors and coaches.

Jolie’s performance in Maria marks a significant chapter in both her personal and professional life, allowing her to embrace new challenges while reflecting on her own evolution as an artist and individual.
