Ariana Grande has opened up about the challenges of navigating public perception as her career soared, suggesting that her rise to fame transformed her image from a relatable teen to an “evil diva.” In an interview with *Vanity Fair*, the 31-year-old singer, who gained fame on Nickelodeon’s *Victorious*, discussed how the media narrative surrounding her changed drastically as she achieved success.

“The back-and-forth throughout my career has been hard to navigate mentally,” Grande shared. “I was this approachable, funny redhead on Nickelodeon, and everyone liked me. Then, after one too many hit records, everyone decided that I was an evil diva. Other terrible things happened, and suddenly I was both a hero and a victim.”

Grande expressed her belief that some media outlets have attempted to undermine her since she was just 19. “But you know what? I’m 31 years old, and while I’m not perfect, I am deeply good, and I’m proud of who I’m becoming,” she said.

Recently, the *Wicked* star has faced criticism regarding changes in her speaking voice during and after filming the adaptation of the beloved musical. She emphasized that the transformation of her voice as a performer is often misunderstood and noted a double standard in how male actors are perceived in similar situations. “When it’s a male actor, it’s acclaimed. There may be jokes made, but they are usually preceded by praise: ‘Oh, wow, he was so lost in the role,’” she explained. “Being a woman in this industry means you are treated differently and are under a microscope in a way that some people aren’t.”

Over the summer, she showcased her vocal versatility during an appearance on Penn Badgley’s *Podcrushed* podcast, where she acknowledged on TikTok that she “intentionally” alters her vocal placement based on her singing demands. In her conversation with *Vanity Fair*, she reiterated, “It’s something that I’m just really proud of.”
