Michael Caine to Receive Lifetime Honor at European Film Awards

Michael Caine is getting another trophy for his mantlepiece.

The acclaimed 83-year-old British actor, whose career stretches from playing the dramatic lead in Brit classics such as Alfie, Get Carter and The Italian Job, to Oscar-winning performances in Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters and Lasse Hallstrom's The Cider House Rules, to being the go-to man of gravitas as Alfred the butler in Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, will receive a lifetime-achievement honor as an outstanding film personality at the 2015 European Film Awards.

Caine will receive the honorary award from the European Film Academy chairwoman, Polish director Agnieskzka Holland, and EFA president Wim Wenders at the EFA gala in Berlin Dec.12.

“We have come to the decision that we are long overdue on paying special tribute to Sir Michael Caine,” said Holland and Wenders in a joint statement. “This recognition to an outstanding film personality is coming from the bottom of our hearts and has only been presented twice in the almost 30 years of the European Film Awards: to our founding member Manoel de Oliveira and to [French actor] Michel Piccoli.”

Caine is also in the running for the best actor honor at the 28th European Film Awards for his role alongside Harvey Keitel in Paolo Sorrentino's Youth.
