The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, setting the stage for a thrilling awards season.

Following an acknowledgement of the ongoing wildfires impacting Los Angeles from Academy leadership, presenters Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott revealed the nominees for the film industry's top prize.

"Emilia Pérez" emerged as the frontrunner with a leading 13 nominations, followed closely by "The Brutalist" and "Wicked" with 10 nominations each.

"Emilia Pérez," a Spanish-language film, has faced its share of controversy. While it garnered four Golden Globe wins, criticism arose regarding Selena Gomez's portrayal of the lead character and the film's representation of the transgender community. Despite these concerns, "Emilia Pérez" achieved a significant milestone, surpassing "Roma" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" for the most nominations ever received by a non-English language film.

"The Brutalist," a historical drama directed by Brady Corbet, stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones as Hungarian refugees in post-WWII America. The film, a Golden Globe winner, recently sparked debate over its use of artificial intelligence for character accents. Director Corbet has staunchly defended his actors amidst the controversy.

"Wicked," the highly anticipated musical adaptation, proved a box office success and translated that popularity into significant awards recognition. The film received a Best Picture nomination and garnered individual honors for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. This marks the first time two musicals have been nominated for Best Picture since 1968.

The acting categories saw a strong showing of first-time nominees, with 13 actors receiving their inaugural Oscar nods, including Kieran Culkin, Demi Moore, Isabella Rossellini, and Zoe Saldaña.

Conan O'Brien is set to host the 97th Academy Awards ceremony on March 2nd, airing live on ABC.
