Selena Gomez has sparked intense debate after sharing and later deleting an emotional video condemning former President Donald Trump’s latest deportation policies. The Only Murders in the Building star, whose family has Mexican roots, expressed deep sorrow over the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, which reportedly resulted in the arrest of nearly 1,000 individuals across major U.S. cities in just three days.
A Tearful Plea for Migrant Families
In the now-deleted Instagram post, Gomez broke down in tears, saying:
"I just want to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked. The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise."
The 32-year-old actress and singer captioned the video with a Mexican flag emoji and the words: "I'm sorry."
Backlash and Deletion
The post quickly went viral, drawing both support and criticism. While many praised Gomez for using her platform to advocate for immigrant rights, Trump supporters accused her of being performative and criticized her for not addressing immigration law complexities.
Following the backlash, Gomez deleted the video and later shared a cryptic Instagram Story:
"Apparently, it’s not OK to show empathy for people."
That post, too, was later removed.
Trump’s Controversial Executive Orders
The controversy comes just days after Trump signed new executive orders expanding ICE’s authority to arrest and detain undocumented migrants. His administration argues that the measures aim to strengthen national security, while critics call them inhumane and discriminatory.
Gomez’s History of Immigration Advocacy
This is not the first time Selena Gomez has spoken out on immigration issues. In a 2019 Time magazine essay, she detailed her own family’s experience crossing the border from Mexico, writing:
"Undocumented immigration is an issue I think about every day, and I never forget how blessed I am to have been born in this country thanks to my family and the grace of circumstance."
Although she acknowledged the need for immigration laws, she also emphasized the importance of America’s history as a nation of immigrants:
"We need rules and regulations, but we also have to remember that our country was formed by people who came here from other countries."
A Divisive Debate
Gomez’s emotional reaction has once again brought immigration policy to the forefront of political discussions. While some commend her compassion, others question whether celebrities should engage in complex political matters.
As immigration enforcement intensifies under Trump’s policies, many undocumented families remain in fear, and Gomez’s viral moment has reignited debate over the human cost of deportation.
