Apple is set to unveil the iPhone 17 Air, which promises to be the slimmest iPhone to date. However, in a bold move that would have marked a massive departure from the norm, Apple reportedly considered making this model the company’s first-ever completely port-free iPhone, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The concept of a port-free device was an ambitious step towards an entirely wireless experience, with all data transfer and charging handled through MagSafe wireless charging and cloud-based syncing. The iPhone 17 Air would have ditched the USB-C connector and even the physical SIM tray, relying solely on wireless technology for both charging and data storage. This idea would have marked a major shift in how we interact with our devices—removing all physical ports and connectors.

However, Apple ultimately decided to pause these plans for several reasons. One of the primary concerns, as reported by Bloomberg, was the regulatory challenges Apple would face, particularly in the European Union. The EU has been pushing for standardization, with USB-C now required as a universal charging port for smartphones. Apple was the last major brand to offer a proprietary port on its smartphones, finally transitioning to USB-C with the iPhone 15 series. A completely portless design would have likely sparked regulatory complications and drawn criticism from both consumers and governments.

From a practical standpoint, the absence of a port would have meant the iPhone 17 Air would depend entirely on wireless charging through the MagSafe system. Moreover, users would need to rely on iCloud for data storage and management, as there would be no physical connection for transferring data or extracting information via cables. This could have proven to be a cumbersome change for average users, particularly when it comes to repairability and accessibility.

Despite these obstacles, Apple is still seriously considering a future with port-free smartphones. If the iPhone 17 Air proves successful in the market, the company may revisit this concept for future models. Apple is not alone in its exploration of minimalist designs; Chinese smartphone makers Vivo and Meizu previously showcased similar ideas with their 2019 concept devices—the Vivo Apex and Meizu Zero—which also lacked physical ports. While these concepts never made it to mass production, they hinted at the possibility of a truly wireless future for smartphones.

As we look ahead, Apple’s iPhone 17 Air could signal the beginning of a new era in mobile technology, one where the very nature of our devices is defined by wireless capabilities. Other companies, including Samsung, Honor, and Oppo, are also reportedly working on their own ultra-slim and port-free designs, making 2025 a potentially transformative year for smartphones
