WhatsApp to Introduce Motion Photo Support for Android Users
WhatsApp is currently developing a new feature that will allow Android users to share motion photos in individual chats, groups, and channels.
Motion photos are a type of media format that captures a short moment of movement before and after a still image is taken. Unlike traditional photos, motion photos include a few seconds of video and audio, adding a dynamic element to otherwise static shots. This feature is particularly popular on certain smartphones, bridging the gap between standard images and videos by incorporating movement into snapshots.
According to WABetaInfo, a website specializing in WhatsApp updates, the upcoming support for motion photos aims to enhance media-sharing capabilities within the app. Once the feature is rolled out, a new button will appear in the gallery section of WhatsApp, allowing users to choose between sending a still image or a motion photo, if available.
Motion photo functionality is already common in several smartphones. Samsung’s Galaxy devices support this feature under the same name, “Motion Photo.” On Google Pixel devices, it is often referred to as “Top Shot” or “Motion Photos.” Apple also offers a similar feature called “Live Photos” for iPhones, which is already supported on WhatsApp for iOS.
