“Mummy” franchise heading for facelift with Tom Cruise

After months of speculations, official reports have surfaced of Tom Cruise starring in Universal’s The Mummy.

According to a report in Forbes, the further reboot of the classic 1932 Boris Karloff horror movie, which itself was rebooted into an enormously successful fantasy action franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in 1999, is supposed to be the start of what Universal hopes will be its connected universe mythology involving their classic monsters library.

The film, produced by Alex Kurtzman, Chris Morgan, and Sean Daniel, directed by Alex Kurtzman, and written by Jon Spaihts, will presumably be the first in an ongoing series of action-centric horror/fantasy films that will theoretically be the equivalent of Walt Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe and/or Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.’s DC Comics movie world.

And as such, getting a movie star like Tom Cruise on-board is a gigantic coup for the first shot across the bow.

The Mummy will now open June 9, 2017 at a theater near you courtesy of Universal.
