Twitter's found a way to make you tweet more – or so it thinks
Twitter’s updating your timeline on the same lines of its year-ago feature of ‘while you were away’.
The new feature, it hopes, will make you start tweeting and retweeting more. “We've already seen that people who use this new feature tend to Retweet and Tweet more,” it claims in a blog post
The microblogging site says its latest feature will show you the tweets you missed but are “most likely to care about” when you look at your Twitter timeline after a while. How it arrives at the “most likely to care about” tweets is anybody’s guess – perhaps it’ll look at topics and users you’ve retweeted in the past and decide that you’re still interested in it.
Anyways, here’s how Twitter says it works: ‘You flip on the feature in your settings; then when you open Twitter after being away for a while, the Tweets you're most likely to care about will appear at the top of your timeline – still recent and in reverse chronological order.
The rest of the Tweets will be displayed right underneath, also in reverse chronological order, as always. At any point, just pull-to-refresh to see all new Tweets at the top in the live, up-to-the-second experience you already know and love.’
The microblogging site is terming the tweets it thinks you care about as the ‘best tweets’. Your timeline section in your Twitter settings now has an option – ‘Show me the best Tweets first’. Go flip it on and see how you like it.
Never mind if you don’t find it at first… it’s a little buried in the whole settings maze. And, besides, twitter will be automatically flipping it on for you in any case in a few days.
The good guys at Twitter are all ears for your feedback. “We’ll be listening to your feedback and making it even better over time. Then we'll be turning on the feature for you in coming weeks — look out for a notification in your timeline. We love it and think you will too. If you don't, send your thoughts our way, and you can easily turn it off in settings,” it says.
