On a high, musically
Chasing a dream by deferring academic career is a difficult proposition. But Sarah Nabil was sure that her career lies in music and other things. Despite obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in International Business with flying colours from the Royal University for Woman in 2014, she had other plans.
Sarah has pushed her boundaries and excelled in fields that involved music, social media and communications as well as brand management. She is a self-taught composer; she started to learn to play herself the keys at the age of 10. At the age of 17, Sarah found the art of music production and was inspired by her mentor in music production DJ Outlaw. She fell in love with music production and decided that it was her career.
She is now currently a producer and composer under Outlaw Productions, as well as Outlaw Productions’ social media and communications specialist. Sarah is also the music curator at Malja (Red Bull Space), where she handles all music-related events, workshops and management of the production studio (QTF Sound Space).
Coming a long way
Sarah has come a long way from being self-taught and inspired by her mentor and her team. DJ Outlaw has helped her grow as an artist especially in production and sound engineering.
Sarah says, “The passion has always been there, it’s what keeps me going. Developing it is something I do on a daily basis through practising, learning, taking online courses, meeting and working with other artists. Outlaw Productions is my support system.” “I’m blessed to be surrounded by a super talented team. It’s been six years since I started working with Outlaw, and we’ve come such a long way!”
For Sarah, entering this field meant a breakthrough for her as it paved the way for many women to follow.
“Being the first female R&B/Hip Hop music producer in the region is a major stepping stone towards helping open doors for other young women to get into the industry. It’s humbling when someone tells me I’m inspiring them to take a big step towards something unconventional,” she explains proudly.
“To me that’s a huge breakthrough. Everything we’ve achieved as Outlaw Productions has been the result of a team effort, and those are definitely my favourite achievements,” she says.
Her style of music is within the lines of R&B, soul, and hip-hop. “They’re my favourite genres to listen to. I enjoy creating these types of music in my own way. Music is pretty much everything to me. I made a decision to do what I love for a living; I don’t want it to be just a hobby, so its significance lies in it being my life,” Sarah elaborates.
She expresses with confidence the inspiration she pulls together to be who she is as she says, “Just like any artist, the challenge is to always keep pushing forward, staying creative, and getting better day by day regardless of whatever negativity may come about sometimes.”
According to her, it’s not an easy career choice, especially in her region. “I find inspiration all around me, whether it’s family, my team, other artists, success stories, etc. Different things inspire me everyday. Remember that nothing that’s worth having ever comes easy,” Sarah declares. “At the moment, I’m working on a few projects, both personal and for clients. I can’t wait to share some of what I’ve been working on with some regional artists. Everything will be announced in due time. There are tons of plans for the future. There’s a lot in store for Outlaw Productions as a team,” she concludes. Follow Sarah Nabil on social media: Instagram: @sarahnabil, Twitter: @sarahnabil.
