Paracetamol cause for neurological disorders : Bahrain
Manama : Prolonged use of paracetamol could lead to neurological disorders, according to visiting neurosurgeon Dr. Dilip Panikar.
“Use of paracetamol could be harmful over long term,” said Dr. Panikar.
He said that frequent use of the analgesic could lead to various neurological disorders. “Use of the drug should be controlled and should not be taken for a long term.”
“They can bring neurological disorders. It’s misuse can be very harmful for the body. Paracetamol can be used for fever, minor aches. But when it becomes a habit, it becomes an issue. One should not be solely relying on it to treat pain,” he suggested.
“Logically, if there is persistent pain, it only makes sense to find out what it is that is causing the pain and not just trying to suppress the pain using pills. There will be an underlying cause that manifests as pain, especially if it is continuing for a long time,” Dr. Panikar said.
“Now paracetamol is usually a 500 milligram tablet. If you have these tablets once in a while, it is absolutely fine. Problem is when you keep having it for many weeks or many months without any limit or without keeping track. The person who does this will not have an idea about how-many paracetamols they have had or how long they have been having them because they lose count,” he explained.
“That’s when the problems start, there is also cases of paracetamol causing liver diseases and even liver failure. These kind of problems are possible,” the neurosurgeon cautioned.
“Instead of having pain killers, find out what is causing the pain and why it is not going away. The underlying cause could be something serious or it could be something simple,” he added.
