Designs and messages

Manama  : Designs are not just for inviting the cynosure of all eyes. Instead they should also make an impact on every viewer, believes Jenan Mohamedi. A Graphic Design student of the Bahrain Polytechnic, Jenan considers that messages and awareness can be permeated through this unique and creative medium. She is currently a freelance designer, who loves design, nature, reading and illustrating.

It was during high school when art and design caught her interest, which made her to participate in art competitions. She then enriched her knowledge in arts and decided to take Visual Design as a major. Now design has become a great part of her identity, because she feels like she can excel, bring change and achieve a lot by involving in it.

Jenan Mohamedi has achieved in completing her degree project major “Luminate.” She has recently successfully showcased her work in the Behance portfolio review event. She has also designed an awareness campaign poster on domestic and sexual violence against women.

Works speak for a cause

Speaking to Jenan Mohamedi, she explained the importance of being a graphic designer and what it means to bringing change and causing a reaction. “As a graphic designer I like to highlight a cause- environmental or social. I’m very passionate about solving or spreading awareness about a cause happening somewhere,” she revealed. “I’m also very interested in print design, advertising and branding.”

Jenan’s  “Luminate” project highlighted a social issue about mental illness. It showcased how the issue should be taken more seriously despite it being a ‘discerning’ state of the mind. She has made a booklet to show people the symptoms of mental disorders, after approaching doctors about the stigma surrounding it.

Talking about what excites and inspires her when it comes to design, Jenan commented: “It is exciting to come up with something unique creations. Also knowing about people’s reactions is something I always look forward to. The source of any inspiration should always be what you believe in or what makes you feel yourself.” “I believe that in design there is no competition. There’s always room to improve ourselves, and opportunity to meet new people and connect with each other.”

“I also believe that if you set your values and work with a cause, you achieve something big that stays and people appreciate that,” she pointed out.  “I’m currently looking for new opportunities to learn more about designs and enrich myself. My goal is to improve design in Bahrain. I want to change how people see design here, because design isn’t just a way to make people buy something or tell them about this new offer like we’re used. Design is a tool to make a change in people’s lives and deliver our message, feelings or ideas faster,” Jenan added. Her future plans are big, but she has the determination to achieve her goal.
