Colours of creativity

Manama : The creative life of British artist Carie Sauze is driven by her passion for tracing new possibilities in painting. Her lifelike paintings based on the Souq are typical example for Carie’s talent.

Prior to her arrival in Bahrain in 2007, Carie had a short stint as an Art teacher at the International School of Florence, Italy. She specialises in watercolor, pastel, graphite and amp; coloured pencil, landscape and portraits.

She studied Fine Arts and Education at Clifton College, University of Nottingham, UK. In a freewheeling conversation with DT News, Carie shared about her passion, style and plans.

Excerpts:

How did it start?

I cannot remember a single day without drawing. I drove my mum mad always by asking for more paper and pencils when I was a child. I have to draw or paint or do something creative every day.

When I get totally involved in a painting or project then the rest of the world and time disappears. My dad was a professional photographer. He used to take amazing photographs. I think I became more aware of the human faces and expressions from an early age through his works.

About paintings and favorite Subject…

My favorite subject for painting in Bahrain is the Souq.  I like the complicated details, colours and feel of the place. I want the viewer to feel like they are really there and experience the hustle and bustle of the place. I want the viewer to notice novel details in my paintings that they had not noticed before.  I also like to portray reflections in water, metal and glass. I started out as a portrait painter and am still passionate about doing children’s portraits.

Tell us about your style of painting…

Over the years, I have developed a photo realistic style.  Many people have influenced me over the years. Historic artists like Jan Van Eyck and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood have influenced me to some extent. The international artists such as Joe Dowden, David Curtis and Joseph Zbukvic and portrait artists Jan Kunz and Cindy Agan have also inspired me. I hope in five years my paintings will have evolved. And I will have mastered some new media and techniques.

About your future plans…

My plans for 2016 are for a huge change. Sadly, after nine years I am leaving Bahrain. My husband is retiring and we are returning to the UK to remodel our house there. We may sell it and move to another place.

I spent the last few months revamping my website and an “Art Blog.” They show the process of my paintings or just daily sketches plus tips on how to draw.

I want to do some art courses and play with new techniques.  I’ve been doing some online courses on sketching, and pen and ink drawing. I am excited about doing more. My daughter and I are also working on a children’s book together for which I have to do illustrations.
