Zoom in on island

ManamaWorld Photography Day is celebrated every year on August 19 to honour those artists, who make a picture say a thousand words. With the growth of technology, photography appears to be a snap as millions of photographs are being uploaded everyday on social media networks. Be it a hobby or profession, photography demands the intense expression of every click.

Shutterflies, the photography club of American Women’s Association (AWA) provides its members such a platform. They can exhibit their potential through their snaps. Shutterflies consists of a group of passionate women photographers. Since its inception in 2016, the photography club has become a platform to learn the art of light and shadows through the world of lens, be it from mobile cameras or DSLRs.

Shutterflies is open to all the members of the AWA. Classes and all the other activities are free of charge for them. Now the group has more than 25 members.

Activities of Shutterflies

There is a gradual learning process of photography basics.  The group conducts regular workshops and meetings wherein they learn photography composition basics and other techniques.

The workshops are not complicated; it is always fun-filled. They feel that learning comes from practical photo shoots. Shutterflies believes that albeit there is no formal training, it is the passion-driven attitude that encourages them being a good photographer. The learning is taken forward to practical photo shoots.

Photo walks

The first photo walk was at the Princess Sabeeka Park at Awali during winter when flowers were in full bloom! Winters in Bahrain come with beautiful evenings in all hues and this was the time when the group went for a ‘sunset shoot’ at Budaiya Fishermen Port.

During Ramadan, they made a trip to Bab Al Bahrain to capture its lights and the glitter. Most recently, the group carried out a photo shoot ‘Desert Queens’ where all the AWA members were invited to come and dress-up in traditional Arabic ‘Jalabias’ along with local props and music.

Future plans

The talented AWA photographers of Shutterflies have been exhibiting their work with other artists and painters. They intend to continue this trend as a group in the future too.

They are planning more workshops with renowned photographers and professionals even from outside the Kingdom. The idea is to make it a group of the most creative ladies behind the lens on the island.
