Discerning Colours

Manama : Art was not alien to her. It was a kind of self-discovery for Lamees Al Jamea when she realised her innate artistic potential. The busy job of a Human Resource Manager could not obliterate or douse the artistic spark in her.
A graduate majoring in Business Information System at the University of Bahrain, Lamees finally realised that her professional life is not an impediment to fulfil her dream to become an artist. “It was never too late,” she thought.
Since her family appreciated art, she was introduced to art at a very young age. She gained some experience by participating in art competitions. She had won in some of these contests.
Later college education and job came into her life. Lamees became more distracted but she managed to pick up the brushes after six years. She became a self-taught artist, who has grown a liking towards abstract modern art.
The birth of Cup of Art happened when a group of self-made artists first gathered at her place and turned it into a studio. She eventually became one of the co-founders along with other five budding artists.

Passion for colours
While speaking to Lamees Al Jamea, she expressed her passion for the kind of art she creates with painting colours and how it takes her to a completely different zone that keeps her so in tune with herself.
“I like to express my feelings translated into colours. It is a kind of therapy that gives a sense of achievement when I am done with a painting.  Most of my paintings are figures. I use acrylic paint and sometimes mix media. I never plan what I paint, I just start my painting and let my feelings lead me till the end,” she elaborates.
“On a personal level, I am committed to paint and sometimes experiment with new techniques and styles from time to time. What motivates me to paint could be anything. It could be a story I read or heard. Sometimes a piece of music, a play or even other cultures I got introduced to. Anything that can move my thoughts and feelings can be reflected on my paintings,” Lamees says.
Since a working professional, time management is a daunting task for Lamees. “I have to keep organising my time after working hours with family commitments and find time with colours.”

Cup of Art Organising events for Cup of Art has helped her and a lot of other artists to network with other professional artists. “The Cup of Art started from casual group gathering of artists at my house. The room later turned into studio. The vibe and the experience were amazing. We would like to take this experience and reach more people like us. We then got exposed to more professional artists, who closely guided us and gave us some tips, while at the same time we help beginners,” Lamees explains. “Cup of Art is a way of introducing art lifestyle into our society by organising events every month with different concepts. I learned that it is a great way to learn and gain more experience from professional artists in Bahrain and abroad. I also plan to organise my own solo exhibition someday,” she added.
