Koenigsegg Agera RS breaks Bugatti’s speed record

The Koenigsegg Agera RS has been crowned as the fastest car ever after clocking 277mph.

The Swedish supercar topped the Bugatti Veyron’s 267mph world record - and even beat the Hennessey Venom GT’s unofficial 271mph.

The £1.5million Agera RS maxed out at 272mph and 284mph on its two runs with the average topping the old record by 10mph.

The attempt was completed on an 11-mile closed public road near Las Vegas with factory driver Niklas Lilja at the wheel.

The on-board footage, courtesy of RaceLogic, shows the terrifying speed direct from the cockpit with the outside hurtling past.

Niklas takes it easy at first, gradually building up speed to avoid overworking the tyres and making sure the car is fully planted, before unleashing the full power of the 5.0-litre V8.

And the supercar could go even quicker if it gets new tyres to handle the extreme heat and pressures needed to cope with the speed.

The world record attempt was completed on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres that a regular punter can buy online.

It’s the second time in as many months that Koenigsegg has topped Bugatti - stealing its 0-400-0 record by five seconds in October.

The £2million Chiron is now being lined up to take back the top speed world record for Bugatti.

But both might have to keep an eye in the rear view mirror with the new Hennessey Venom F5 recently revealed.

The previous Venom GT clocked a 270mph top speed back in 2014 - but only did it in one direction meaning it never classified as an official record.

The F5 is tipped to be the first production car to hit 300mph.
