Aisha's such a gem!
19-year -old Aisha Mohammed is not just another fashion designing student at the Royal University for Women; she is a successful entrepreneur, who runs a jewellery design business named Aisha Jewels.
Since childhood itself, Aisha has been passionate about art.
Jewellery design came in much later.
In high school, her teachers noted her flair for business and encouraged her to participate in as much business-related activities as possible. At the age of 17, she won the Entrepreneur of the Year award at school and was recommended to join the Mashroo3i initiative by Tamkeen, through which she actively engaged in Tamkeen- related initiatives.
Last year, under the sponsorship of the Devji group, one of the premier jewellery groups operating in Bahrain since 1950, she got the opportunity to showcase her designs under her brand Aisha Jewels at prestigious Jewellery Arabia exhibition. Her firm also brought out a lookbook for the exhibition.
In January this year, she participated in the Bahrain Visionaries exhibition.
She also gives lectures in schools and universities on entrepreneurship and her experience with Aisha Jewellers. She was chosen to teach jewellery design for age groups 15-17 and 18-25 in Youth City 2030.
‘Entrepreneurs fight challenges’
Aisha spoke to DT News on her principle as an entrepreneur and how she landed in her career. “An entrepreneur does not see problems but rather challenges that can be overcome with hard work and perseverance. I always knew that I would work in something artistic and was contemplating doing architectural design. But after participating in Mashoo3i, I realised that jewellery design is my forte.”
What is the USP of Aisha Jewels?
Aisha Jewels focuses on the exclusive combination of 22 karat gold and hand-cut wood. I also work with precious and semi-precious gems. I want my creations to be special. Be it a memorable occasion or communicating affection, my jewellery should stay close to one’s heart.
What inspires you to work in this field?
Describing art as work is somewhat strange. I wake up every day thinking about art. When I am bored, I paint and when I am excited, I design. The rest of the time, I spend sourcing materials for my designs and talking to my production partners. As you see, for me, work is part of life and not an addition to it.
Inspiration changes all the time; what started as hobby is turning into a structured process of research and refinement and I am sure this will also change in the future as I gain more experience.
What are your future plans?
At the end of this month, I will be judging the student product pitching at the Riffa Views International School. I am also one of the four designers to showcase their creations at a special designer section ‘The Designer Avenue’ at the Dubai International Jewels in December.
Right now, I am preparing for the Seedstars Manama competition. I have been working hard and with this, I will be taking Aisha Jewels to the next level by showcasing my pieces in Bahrain and the region, either on my own or through an established brand name. While preparing for this competition, I can focus more on the right business plan, she signs off.
