Know the truth about Egg Yolks

Eggs have been the subject of bad press for way too long. So much misinformation has been put out there by medical experts and fitness gurus that many people believe wholeheartedly that egg yolks are the worst kind of poison they can put into their system.

Ok! First things first, egg yolk is not a terrible food that you should avoid. Please! Don’t believe it. In fact, it is the healthiest part of an egg, according to a research conducted in University of Connecticut.

The yolk contains 100 per cent of the carotenes, essential fatty acids, vitamins A, E, D, and K (6 items). The white does not contain 100pc of any nutrient.

The yolk contains more than 90pc of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, B6, folate, and B12, and 89pc of the panthothenic acid (9 items). The white does not contain more than 90pc of any nutrient, but contains over 80pc of the magnesium, sodium, and niacin (3 items).

The yolk contains between 50pc and 80pc of the copper, manganese, and selenium, while the white contains between 50pc and 80pc of the potassium, riboflavin, and essential amino acids.

Boosts good cholesterol

There are different types of cholesterol, good and bad. The cholesterol found in foods doesn’t necessarily mean an increase in the cholesterol that clogs you up.

LDL (Low Density Lipoproteins) otherwise known as the “bad cholesterol” is produced by liver and transported to other parts of your body such as heart, muscles, and other organs. This is the one you need to keep low because it will clog up your arteries and cause numerous health concerns such as heart disease. If you have a high LDL, it indicates that you have too much cholesterol floating around in your blood stream.

HDL (High Density Lipoproteins), the “good cholesterol”, is also produced by liver, but it’s role is to go through the body and grab the bad cholesterol and other fats and bring them back to your liver so that they can be destroyed or processed into something your body can use.

Say the word ‘cholesterol’ and everybody shivers with fear. But high cholesterol is not a disease – heart trouble is. Cholesterol is vital to our wellbeing in regards to repairing cells, maintaining brain function and manufacturing Vitamin D to regulate blood sugar levels, metabolise calcium, improve immunity and prevent cancer. HDL is also a powerful antioxidant in itself.

Recent studies have shown that eating whole eggs actually raises HDL cholesterol and that is why your overall cholesterol readings show a rise!

Extensive studies carried out by the University of Connecticut have shown that when people in the study group consumed three to four eggs per day, with the yolk, virtually everyone experienced either no change to their cholesterol levels and in the individuals who did, the change was beneficial.

Researcher Professor Bruce Griffin said eggs were actually a key part of a healthy diet, as they were particularly packed full of nutrients.
