As the holy month of Ramadan envelops Istanbul, the city’s ancient streets come alive with the resonant beats of drums. Clad in traditional Ottoman attire, the Ramadan drummers, known as “mahyacılar” or “davulcular,” embark on their nightly rounds, weaving through neighborhoods to rouse the faithful for suhoor, the pre-dawn meal before fasting begins. This centuries-old tradition, a blend of rhythm and reverence, remains a cherished part of Istanbul’s cultural and spiritual fabric.
A Sacred Duty in the Still of Night
Long before the advent of alarm clocks, these drummers played a vital role in waking Muslims for suhoor. Today, their rhythmic beats and melodic chants continue to echo through the city’s labyrinthine alleyways. At 3:30 a.m., the drummers gather at local mosques, offering silent prayers before setting out on their nightly journey. Their drums, often adorned with intricate patterns and calligraphic inscriptions, are more than instruments— they are symbols of history and tradition.
Voices of the Past, Beats of the Present
The drummers’ chants, a unique blend of Arabic and Turkish, carry a message of reverence and invitation. “Awake, believers, and partake in the blessings of suhoor,” they call out, their voices cutting through the pre-dawn stillness. For Mehmet Aydın, a drummer with over two decades of experience, this tradition is a sacred duty. “It’s more than just a job,” he says. “It connects us to our ancestors and reminds us of the rich tapestry of our culture.”
A Legacy Passed Down Through Generations
Ahmet Yılmaz, whose family has been part of this tradition for over a century, shares Aydın’s sentiments. “When I beat my drum, I feel a sense of continuity,” he explains. “It’s as if I’m carrying the torch for those who came before me.” The drummers’ dedication extends beyond their nightly rounds. Many craft their own drums, meticulously selecting materials and applying designs passed down through generations, reflecting their deep reverence for the craft.
Echoes of Tradition in a Modern World
As dawn breaks, the drummers’ beats fade into the morning bustle, their duty fulfilled for another night. Yet, their impact lingers, a testament to Istanbul’s enduring connection to its heritage. In a rapidly changing world, these drummers stand as guardians of a cherished tradition, ensuring that the echoes of the past continue to resonate through the tpresent and into the future.
