The Minecraft Movie has dug its way to box office gold, dominating theaters across North America with a blockbuster debut that has broken records for video game adaptations.

The Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures production earned an estimated $157 million over its opening weekend in North America alone, making it the biggest domestic release of 2025 so far. The film, based on the wildly popular sandbox video game, features a star-studded cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge.

With an additional $144 million in international ticket sales, the global opening haul soared to $301 millionmore than double its $150 million production budget, according to Variety.

The movie’s performance also outpaced the previous record-holder for video game adaptations, surpassing the $146 million opening of 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Movie.

“The domestic box office has been asleep in 2025, and this is an overdue wakeup,” said box office analyst David A. Gross, who credited the film’s success to its cross-generational appeal and the massive fanbase of the Minecraft franchise, which has sold over 300 million copies globally. Despite mixed reviews, Gross noted that such films “are made for moviegoers, not critics.”
