Bahrain an important location for interfaith dialogues in the Gulf region

His Holiness the Pope holds a significant role as the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church and a global symbol of peace, dialogue, and humanitarian leadership. The Pope’s influence extends well beyond religious boundaries, fostering conversations around social justice, human rights, and interfaith cooperation.

It is with sadness that, many of us, as a global community, look back on the life of, and pay our respects to the loss of Pope Francis, a leader who was able to bring people together, no matter their faith or creed.

As a Bahraini, I am proud of the Kingdom of Bahrian’s efforts, especially under the current reign of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, to promote religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, for example though the pioneering efforts of the King Hamad Global Center for Coexistence and Tolerance. The center embodies in its vision, mission and goals the fundamental values from the history and civilization of the Kingdom of Bahrain throughout the ages. This is represented in openness to all civilizations and cultures, along with the promotion of coexistence and tolerance.

Bahrain has emerged as an important location for interfaith dialogues in the Gulf region. This was marked by the historic visit of late Pope Francis in 2022, by invitation of His Majesty the King; the first by a pontiff, that underscored the Vatican’s commitment to building bridges between faiths.

This relationship not only reflects a shared desire for global peace, but also sheds light on Bahrain’s role as a meeting point for diverse religious communities in the Middle East and the world.

The Pope’s presence in Bahrain strengthened diplomatic and cultural ties, and promoted a mutual understanding in a world often divided by differences. As we look back on Pope Francis life of service to all, many in Bahrain will certainly not forget his contribution to interfaith dialogue and his historical visit to Bahrain, especially his participation in the Bahrain Forum for Dialogue: East and West for Human Coexistence, with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar.

As a Bahraini, I am confident that the Kingdom of Bahrain will continue to work with the Holy See, and all faiths around the world towards building on the tenants of interfaith dialogue, coexistence, peace and tolerance for the benefit of all of humanity.
