In an unusual case, a man has admitted to making a "very silly" mistake after stealing a beloved 20kg gorilla statue from a retirement village in Melbourne.
Matthew Newbould, 33, pleaded guilty on Friday in Heidelberg Magistrates Court to the theft of the garden ornament, affectionately named Garry, from the Leith Park Retirement Village in St Helena, located in Melbourne’s north-east.
The incident occurred on June 6 when Newbould visited the village with a friend to purchase a chest of drawers. While there, he noticed the gorilla statue perched on tree stumps in the garden and impulsively decided to take it.
The theft of Garry, who was well-loved by the residents, left the retirement village community in shock and dismay. However, Newbould has since expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging the foolishness of his behavior.
The court is expected to determine Newbould’s sentence in the coming weeks.
