Emirates Airlines announced on Thursday the cancellation of flights to Iraq, Iran, and Jordan for three days in response to escalating regional unrest sparked by an Iranian missile strike on Israel. This decision comes amid rising fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East.
The airline stated, “Emirates is canceling all flights to/from Iraq (Basra and Baghdad), Iran (Tehran), and Jordan (Amman) on October 4 and 5 due to regional unrest.” The cancellations extend to services that were already halted on Thursday.
Emirates, the largest airline in the Middle East, previously announced the suspension of flights between Dubai and Beirut until October 8, as concerns over safety have prompted several airlines to reevaluate their operations in the region.
In a related development, the German airline group Lufthansa announced on Tuesday that it would suspend flights to Beirut until November 30. Additionally, flights from Lufthansa Group to Tel Aviv have been canceled until October 31, and services to Tehran are halted until October 14.
The recent surge in tensions follows Iran’s launch of approximately 200 missiles, including hypersonic weapons, toward Israel on Tuesday. Many of these missiles traversed Jordanian and Iraqi airspace, prompting immediate security concerns. Israeli defense forces reported successfully intercepting the majority of the missiles.
As the situation evolves, airlines continue to prioritize passenger safety and will adjust their operations based on ongoing developments in the region. Travelers are advised to stay informed about potential changes to flight schedules and to consult with their airlines for the latest updates.
