Riyadh is gearing up for the partial official launch of the Riyadh Metro, set to take place next Wednesday, November 27, according to Al Eqtisadiah. The first phase of operations will cover three lines, with the remaining three lines scheduled to open in mid-December.
Touted as the world’s longest driverless metro system, the Riyadh Metro aims to provide sustainable transportation options, reducing reliance on vehicles and supporting the city’s transformation into a hub for trade and business. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader economic diversification plans under Vision 2030.
Solar panels installed at stations and depots will generate 20% of the energy required for key electrical systems, reflecting the project's commitment to sustainability. Other eco-friendly features include energy-efficient trains, regenerative braking technology, and the exclusive use of renewable energy for powering the metro's operations.
The initial routes opening on November 27 will span three major lines:
Al-Orouba to Batha
King Khalid International Airport Road
The intersection of Abdulrahman Bin Auf Street with Sheikh Hassan Bin Hussein Street
The remaining lines, located along King Abdullah Road, Al-Madina Road, and King Abdulaziz Road, will commence operations in mid-December, completing the metro network’s launch.
Approved in 2012 and awarded to global consortiums in 2013, the $22.5 billion (SR84.4 billion) project has faced delays, including those caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the metro represents a significant milestone in Riyadh’s public transport development.
Ticket prices and discounted packages for riders are expected to be announced soon, with officials urging competitive rates to encourage public usage.
The Riyadh Metro's full launch marks a transformative step for the Saudi capital, offering residents and visitors a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly transit option.
