In a bold new statement on his social media platform, President-elect Donald Trump has warned the BRICS countries that their efforts to reduce dependence on the U.S. Dollar for international trade will not be tolerated. In his latest post, Trump emphasized that the U.S. will not stand by as the BRICS bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, attempts to create a new currency or back alternatives to the dollar. He stated that any country attempting to do so would face severe consequences, including 100% tariffs on exports to the United States.
Trump’s message was clear and direct: "The idea that the BRICS countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. We require a commitment from these countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency, nor back any other currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. economy. They can go find another ‘sucker!’”
The BRICS group, which recently expanded to include countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, has long sought to reduce its reliance on the U.S. Dollar for international trade. As economic powerhouses such as China and Russia explore alternatives to the dollar in global commerce, the U.S. remains a dominant force in the global financial system.
Trump’s latest statement reiterates his "America First" policy, which places heavy emphasis on protecting U.S. economic interests and maintaining the strength of the U.S. Dollar as the world’s primary reserve currency. By warning BRICS countries against any attempts to replace the dollar, Trump is reinforcing his administration's stance on maintaining U.S. dominance in global trade.
The former president’s comments come amidst growing geopolitical tensions, particularly with China and Russia, who have both sought to challenge U.S. influence on the world stage. Russia, in particular, has sought to use the BRICS platform to strengthen its position after being subjected to harsh Western sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine.
While the idea of creating a BRICS currency or adopting alternatives to the dollar has been discussed within the bloc, the reality of replacing the dollar in international trade remains highly unlikely due to deep divisions within BRICS nations and the logistical challenges of such a move.
Trump’s post further underscores his opposition to any efforts that could weaken the U.S. Dollar’s role in global trade. His statement suggests that any nation attempting to shift away from the dollar could face harsh economic repercussions, potentially isolating them from the lucrative U.S. market.
