The United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, has described Syria as being at "a watershed moment" following a seismic shift in the country’s political landscape. Islamist-led rebel forces have declared they have taken control of Damascus, forcing President Bashar al-Assad to flee and effectively ending over five decades of Baath Party rule.
“This marks the closing of a dark chapter that has left deep scars across Syria,” Pedersen said, reflecting on the nearly 14 years of brutal civil war that devastated the country and displaced millions.
He called on Syrians and the international community to embrace this pivotal moment, urging for a future centered on "peace, reconciliation, dignity, and inclusion for all Syrians."
The fall of Damascus marks a turning point in the Syrian conflict, with global attention now focused on ensuring stability and rebuilding the nation. While the path ahead is fraught with challenges, this moment represents an opportunity for a new beginning in a war-torn nation.
