China to Build World's Largest Artificial-Island Airport in Dalian by 2035

A transformative project set to reshape both the aviation landscape and economic future of northeast China is currently underway in Dalian. The construction of the Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport, which will be the world’s largest artificial-island airport, is poised to boost the region’s economic growth and significantly improve international connectivity by 2035.

The airport will occupy an impressive 20.9 square kilometers of land reclaimed from the sea, requiring the use of millions of cubic meters of sand and rock to create the massive structure. The ambitious project aims to provide critical infrastructure to meet the growing demand for passenger and cargo transportation in the region. Once completed, the airport will consist of four runways and a terminal that covers an area of 900,000 square meters (roughly 9.69 million square feet).

The Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport is designed to handle 43 million passengers annually in its initial phase, which is a substantial increase from the capacity of the existing Dalian Zhoushiiz International Airport. As passenger traffic continues to rise, this new facility will be able to more than double the capacity of the current airport, offering much-needed relief. Long-term projections suggest that the airport could accommodate up to 80 million passengers per year, along with processing 1 million tons of cargo.

Dalian, with a population of over 6 million, has long been an essential economic and transportation hub in China. The city is strategically located between Japan and South Korea, making it a critical player in international trade, shipping, oil refining, logistics, and coastal tourism. As such, the construction of this airport is seen as a key development in reinforcing Dalian’s position in global commerce.
