The Biden administration has notified Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms sale to Israel, signaling continued U.S. support for its ally during an ongoing conflict in Gaza that has displaced millions and sparked global outrage, according to a Reuters report.
The deal, which requires approval from congressional committees, includes advanced munitions such as AIM-120C-8 air-to-air missiles, Hellfire AGM-114 missiles, 155mm artillery shells, and small-diameter bombs. While some deliveries may be expedited from existing U.S. stockpiles, the bulk of the package will take years to fulfill, officials familiar with the proposal told Reuters.
President Joe Biden has defended the sale as necessary to bolster Israel’s ability to counter threats from Iran-backed groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. “Israel has the right to defend its citizens in accordance with international law,” a U.S. official stated.
The announcement comes amid mounting international criticism of the war in Gaza, where over 45,000 people have died, according to Gaza's health ministry. The conflict has led to accusations of genocide, mass displacement, and widespread humanitarian suffering.
Protests demanding an arms embargo against Israel have intensified, but U.S. policy remains unchanged. In August, Washington approved a $20 billion arms package for Israel, further cementing its role as Israel's largest arms supplier.
As President Biden’s term nears its end, his administration continues to face scrutiny for its unwavering support of Israel despite the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
