The bodies of two individuals were found in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the airline confirmed in a statement.

The discovery was made shortly after the Airbus A320 had operated Flight 1801 from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, landing in Florida at 11:10 p.m. on Monday, according to flight-tracking data from FlightAware.

“The circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft remain under investigation,” JetBlue said. “This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred.”

Authorities, including deputies from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and a medical examiner, attended the scene overnight. The identities of the individuals have not yet been determined, and the sheriff’s office has not provided further comments on the incident.

Arlene Satchell, a spokesperson for the Broward County Aviation Department, stated that the incident did not impact airport operations.

Stowaways hiding in airplane wheel wells—a practice fraught with danger—face significant risks, including being crushed by contracting landing gear or succumbing to low oxygen levels and extreme cold at high altitudes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has previously reported that approximately 75% of such attempts are fatal.

This tragic discovery follows a similar incident on Christmas Eve when a body was found in the wheel well of a United Airlines Boeing 787 that had flown from Chicago to Hawaii. Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
