President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has declared a major disaster in California, authorizing Federal aid to bolster State, tribal, and local recovery efforts in response to wildfires and straight-line winds that began on January 7, 2025.
The declaration enables Federal funding to support individuals and communities in Los Angeles County, one of the hardest-hit areas. Assistance for affected residents includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-interest loans to address uninsured property losses, and additional resources to aid individuals and business owners in their recovery.
Federal aid will also assist State, tribal, and eligible local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations, on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work in Los Angeles County. Additionally, funding will be available statewide for hazard mitigation measures aimed at reducing the impact of future disasters.
Curtis Brown of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed to oversee Federal recovery operations in the affected areas.
Damage assessments are ongoing in other regions of California, and additional counties may be designated for assistance as evaluations are completed.
This disaster declaration underscores the Federal government’s commitment to supporting communities as they rebuild and recover from the devastating effects of wildfires and extreme weather events.
