At least 30 people were injured on Saturday when two trams collided at Strasbourg's central station, according to local authorities.
Videos and images shared on social media showed the aftermath of the crash, with passengers trapped inside the trams and smoke rising from the site. Alarms could be heard as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
A spokesman for the prefecture confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash, adding, "No fatalities have been confirmed."
Strasbourg's mayor, Jeanne Barseghian, visited the site and described the incident as a "tram collision." She called for patience as authorities await the results of the official investigation, as reported by BFM TV.
Eyewitnesses provided dramatic accounts of the crash. Johan, speaking to AFP, said he saw one tram reversing at high speed moments before the collision. "We heard a big impact, a loud bang," he recalled. Another witness told BFM TV that the tram doors were torn off during the crash.
Emergency services quickly secured the area in front of the station, with the Bas-Rhin region's Fire and Rescue Service urging people via social media to avoid the site to allow rescue efforts to proceed smoothly.
Rene Cellier, director of the Fire and Rescue Service, stated that the injuries included scalp wounds, clavicle fractures, and knee sprains. "Around 100 others with no specific injuries are being evaluated by doctors," he added. Cellier emphasized that the situation "could have been much more serious," noting that the response involved 50 vehicles and 130 firefighters.
Emmanuel Auneau, director of CTS, Strasbourg's public transport authority, confirmed that both tram drivers were uninjured but deeply shaken by the collision.
The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the cause of the incident.
