Riyadh welcomed top diplomats from the Middle East and Europe on Sunday for critical discussions on Syria’s future, as global powers aim to stabilize the war-torn nation following the fall of Bashar al-Assad.

The talks, held in two sessions, first brought together Arab leaders before expanding to include representatives from Turkey, France, the European Union, and the United Nations, a Saudi official confirmed to AFP.

Focus on Stability and Reconstruction
The meeting comes as Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, seeks international support for economic relief and rebuilding efforts. Al-Sharaa’s forces captured Damascus last month, bringing an end to Assad's more than decade-long rule.

Western powers, including the United States and the European Union, imposed sanctions on Assad's regime in response to its violent crackdown on protests that began in 2011, triggering a devastating civil war. Over 13 years, the conflict claimed more than 500,000 lives, devastated Syria’s economy, and displaced millions, many fleeing to Europe.

Conditions for Sanction Relief
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated on Friday that the bloc might consider lifting sanctions if Syria’s new government prioritizes inclusivity and the protection of minority groups.

Saudi Arabia has already extended humanitarian support to Syria this month, sending food, medical supplies, and shelter via land and air. Riyadh is also leading discussions on how to aid Syria’s transition and long-term recovery.

Global Representation
The talks build on discussions held in Jordan last month and reflect a growing international commitment to Syria’s stabilization. Turkish and German foreign ministers have confirmed their attendance, along with U.S. Under Secretary of State John Bass, who recently discussed regional stability during talks in Turkey.

The U.S. delegation emphasized the importance of ensuring Syria does not become a base for terrorism and achieving the lasting defeat of ISIS, according to the State Department.

As diplomatic momentum builds, Sunday’s discussions are a pivotal step toward addressing the humanitarian, economic, and security challenges facing post-Assad Syria.
