Prominent Arab and global leaders have gathered in Riyadh for pivotal discussions on Syria’s future, focusing on humanitarian and political solutions following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime last month.
Chaired by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the Arab foreign ministers’ meeting included representatives from the Arab League, Gulf Cooperation Council, and foreign ministers from Egypt, Syria, Qatar, the UAE, Jordan, Oman, Lebanon, and Bahrain.
The second phase of talks will expand to include Western foreign ministers, the UN special envoy to Syria, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs. These sessions aim to foster international collaboration in rebuilding a war-torn Syria.
Call for Unified Global Action
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stressed the importance of a Syrian-led political process for reconstruction. "A united effort for fair dialogue and rebuilding offers hope for the Syrian people," she remarked, urging cooperation from the global community.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the UK’s support for Syria's transitional government and underscored the importance of inclusive governance, humanitarian aid, and efforts to counter chemical weapons and terrorist threats. "The international community must unite to back the Syrian people as they build a democratic and diverse nation," Lammy stated, confirming plans to meet with regional leaders, including Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
Saudi Arabia’s Role in Humanitarian Stability
Saudi officials reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing humanitarian aid, with a pledge to maintain the aid bridge until stability is achieved. The Saudi leadership has prioritized support for Syria during this transformative phase.
This meeting builds on outcomes from the December summit in Aqaba, Jordan, where the Ministerial Contact Committee reinforced their dedication to aiding Syria through its critical transition.
The Riyadh talks mark a significant moment for unified international support, laying the groundwork for rebuilding Syria and ensuring its path toward a peaceful, inclusive future.
