A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck off the coast of Miyazaki in southwestern Japan late Monday night, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a tsunami advisory for Miyazaki and nearby Kochi prefectures.
Tremor Details and Tsunami Warning
The earthquake occurred at 9:19 PM local time and was centered off the southern island of Kyushu. Following the quake, the JMA issued a tsunami advisory warning of potential waves reaching up to one meter (three feet). Residents were urged to avoid coastal areas and refrain from entering the sea, as repeated tsunami waves could pose a danger. "Please do not enter the sea or go near coastal areas," the JMA emphasized in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
No Immediate Reports of Damage
As of now, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging vigilance among residents as aftershocks could occur.
USGS Report and Revision
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially recorded the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 but later revised it to 6.8. The quake was strongly felt across the region, though the full extent of its impact remains under assessment.
Seismic Activity in the “Ring of Fire”
Japan’s location along the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin, makes it one of the world’s most seismically active countries. The region frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Japan has long maintained rigorous earthquake preparedness measures to mitigate risks in such events. In response to Monday’s earthquake, local authorities took precautionary steps to ensure public safety, highlighting the nation’s readiness to handle seismic activity.
