Sudanese volunteer rescuers have reported that heavy shelling in Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city across the Nile River, killed over 120 people on Monday.

The Ombada Emergency Response Room, part of a volunteer network operating across Sudan, described the attack as “random shelling” in western Omdurman. While they labeled the death toll as preliminary, they did not identify the party responsible for the assault.

Medical workers are grappling with severe shortages of supplies as they tend to numerous injured individuals suffering from various degrees of trauma, the rescuers said.

Sudan's conflict, now surpassing 20 months, has intensified in recent weeks, with escalating clashes between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Tens of thousands of people have been killed, and the country teeters on the edge of famine, aid agencies warn.

Both the army and the RSF face accusations of targeting civilians, health workers, and indiscriminately shelling residential areas.

Omdurman is largely under army control, while the RSF holds much of Khartoum and its surrounding areas. Residents across both sides of the Nile report frequent shelling, with bombs and shrapnel devastating homes and endangering civilians.
