Turkish Airlines announced that it will resume flights to Damascus starting January 23, marking a significant milestone after more than a decade of halted air travel to Syria’s capital. The announcement follows the recent fall of Bashar Al-Assad, Syria’s former president.
"We will begin our flights to Damascus on January 23, with three flights per week," said Bilal Eksi, Turkish Airlines’ chief executive, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
This move aligns with Turkey's commitment to restoring normalcy in Syria after supporting the Islamist-led rebels who ousted Assad last month. Turkish authorities had previously pledged to assist in reestablishing commercial flights to Damascus, citing challenges with the city’s airport, such as the lack of a radar system.
The announcement comes on the heels of Qatar Airways becoming the first international airline to resume flights to Damascus on January 7.
The resumption of flights by Turkish Airlines is seen as a step toward rebuilding Syria's connectivity with the region and beyond, providing vital links for trade, travel, and humanitarian efforts.
