The Israeli security cabinet has endorsed a critical ceasefire and hostage release agreement for Gaza, urging the broader government to finalize its approval. This pivotal development was confirmed in a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Friday.

Security Cabinet's Recommendation

Following an intensive review of the political, security, and humanitarian aspects of the proposed deal, the security cabinet deemed it aligned with the war’s strategic objectives. "After reviewing all the political, security, and humanitarian aspects, and understanding that the proposed deal supports achieving the objectives of the war, [the security cabinet] has recommended that the government approve the proposed framework," the statement read. A final decision by the full government is expected later on Friday.

Challenges in Reaching an Agreement

The agreement faced significant last-minute hurdles, particularly over disagreements on prisoner exchanges. Hamas reportedly sought the release of specific individuals from Israeli custody, while Israel’s military insisted on retaining control of the Philadelphi Corridor along Gaza’s border with Egypt. After extensive discussions, a senior Hamas official revealed that a consensus was reached early Friday for the first phase of the ceasefire, slated to last 42 days.

Political Repercussions in Israel

The ceasefire deal has sparked intense political debate within Netanyahu’s coalition government. Far-right members have threatened to withdraw their support, potentially destabilizing the administration. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir of the Jewish Power party announced plans to exit the coalition if the deal proceeds. Similarly, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich from the Religious Zionism party stated that their continued participation depends on the resumption of military operations at full scale.

Humanitarian and Global Implications

Despite the announcement of the deal, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have continued, with devastating consequences. Gaza’s Civil Defense reported at least 113 fatalities, including 28 children, since the ceasefire discussions began on Wednesday. The broader toll of the conflict remains staggering, with over 46,788 reported deaths and 110,453 injuries in Gaza, as per the Gaza Health Ministry.

Hostage Release Details

The initial phase of the agreement includes the release of 33 hostages, among them Americans Keith Siegel and Sagui Dekel-Chen. French nationals Ofer Kalderon and Ohad Yahalomi are also set to be freed, as confirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron on social media. Israeli officials estimate that 98 hostages remain in Gaza, with about 60 believed to be alive.

Background of the Conflict

The conflict has exacted a severe toll on both sides. Since Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel in October 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people—including over 300 soldiers—Israel’s military operation in Gaza has led to the loss of 405 Israeli soldiers.

Next Steps

As the Israeli government convenes to finalize its decision, the ceasefire deal represents a fragile hope for de-escalation amidst one of the most intense conflicts in recent years. However, political divisions within Israel and ongoing military operations in Gaza underscore the challenges ahead in implementing and sustaining the agreement.
