The New Gwadar International Airport, a major infrastructure project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), officially opened its doors for commercial flights on Monday. The airport’s inaugural flight, operated by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), landed from Karachi at 11:14 AM (PST), marking a historic moment in the country's aviation and economic development.

The arrival of PIA flight PK-503 was celebrated by dignitaries, including Balochistan Governor Sheikh Jaffar Khan Mandokhail, Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti, and Defence and Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif, who were present to greet the flight’s arrival. The aircraft, an ATR, was welcomed with a water salute in recognition of the occasion’s significance.

Located 26 kilometers from the city of Gwadar in the Gurandani area, the new facility spans 4,300 acres, making it the largest airport in Pakistan by land area. The airport boasts a state-of-the-art runway measuring 3,658 meters in length and 75 meters in width, capable of accommodating large international aircraft like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747.

The development of the airport has been largely funded by a $230 million grant from China. While the airport faced delays in commercial operations due to issues with international marketing and the involvement of consultants, the opening marks a fresh beginning for the airport's role in Pakistan’s connectivity.

With the airport now visible on flight tracking platforms, it is expected to play a crucial role in the region's connectivity, particularly under the growing influence of the CPEC project. The new infrastructure will not only bolster tourism but also provide an essential gateway for trade and economic expansion in the southwestern part of Pakistan.

The opening of Gwadar International Airport is a significant step toward improving regional infrastructure and promoting Pakistan's strategic role in international trade and commerce, particularly as a hub connecting China with the Middle East and beyond.
