India's airlines have issued travel advisories for passengers flying to and from the country, especially to New Delhi, as the capital prepares for Republic Day celebrations on January 26. Heightened security measures and traffic restrictions are expected to impact access to Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
Restricted Flight Operations at Delhi Airport
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced that flight operations at IGIA will be restricted between 10:20 AM and 12:45 PM daily from January 19 to January 26 due to preparations for Republic Day. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the AAI urged passengers to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
Airlines Advise Travelers to Plan Ahead
Flag carrier Air India has advised passengers to allow extra time for travel and to frequently check their flight statuses. In an advisory posted on X, the airline stated:
“Passengers traveling to and from Delhi between January 19 and January 26 are requested to allow themselves more time and check the status of their flights before heading to the airport due to Republic Day restrictions.”
Similarly, budget carrier IndiGo urged passengers to arrive earlier than usual, emphasizing the importance of early planning. The airline shared:
“The best journeys begin with smart planning. With Republic Day approaching, arrive a little early and enjoy the ease of traveling with a relaxed mind.”
Weather Conditions Add to Disruptions
In addition to the Republic Day-related restrictions, dense fog and airport congestion have caused delays and cancellations at Delhi Airport over the past week. On Wednesday morning, thick fog further reduced visibility across the city, complicating flight operations.
What Passengers Should Do
To navigate the disruptions, travelers are advised to:
- Check flight statuses frequently for updates or changes.
- Arrive early at the airport to accommodate longer security formalities.
- Plan alternate routes to avoid traffic near the airport.
These measures aim to ensure smoother travel experiences during one of India’s most significant national holidays.
