UN Chief Urges Unified Action to Secure Peace Amid Middle East Transformation

The United Nations Secretary-General delivered an impactful address during the Security Council’s quarterly open debate on the Middle East, emphasizing the region’s profound transformations, humanitarian crises, and opportunities for lasting peace.

A Region in Flux

Opening his remarks, the Secretary-General acknowledged the sweeping changes shaping the Middle East, describing the uncertainty and potential for progress. "We must ensure that the people of the Middle East emerge from this turbulent period with peace, dignity, and hope grounded in action," he stated.

Lebanon: A New Dawn

Fresh from a visit to Lebanon, the Secretary-General expressed optimism about the country’s future amidst challenges. He praised the ongoing efforts to form a representative government and lauded the resilience of UN peacekeeping forces, particularly UNIFIL, which has played a vital role in maintaining the cessation of hostilities. "The United Nations stands fully committed to supporting Lebanon on its path to recovery," he affirmed.

Gaza: Ceasefire Brings Hope

The Secretary-General highlighted recent developments in Gaza, where a ceasefire and hostage release deal have sparked cautious optimism. He commended Egypt, Qatar, and the United States for their mediation efforts and emphasized the need for swift humanitarian action. "More than 630 trucks carrying aid entered Gaza yesterday, marking an essential step in addressing the population’s overwhelming needs," he reported.

He underscored the devastating impact of the October 7 attacks by Hamas and the subsequent destruction in Gaza, urging all parties to uphold their commitments and work towards a permanent ceasefire. "Civilians must be protected, and the delivery of life-saving aid must remain a priority," he said.

The Two-State Solution

The Secretary-General reiterated the urgency of advancing a two-state solution, calling for peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. He expressed deep concern over settlement expansions and potential annexations in the West Bank, warning of severe violations of international law. "Stability in the Middle East hinges on irreversible progress toward a two-state solution," he asserted.

Syria’s Crossroads

Turning to Syria, the Secretary-General acknowledged the country’s critical juncture, advocating for an inclusive political transition aligned with Security Council Resolution 2254. He called for international solidarity and significant efforts to address Syria’s economic and humanitarian crises, emphasizing the need for a united and sovereign Syria.

A Call for Justice and Peace

The Secretary-General concluded with a powerful appeal to the Security Council and Member States to work relentlessly for justice, dignity, human rights, and peace across the Middle East. "As the region undergoes profound transformation, let us seize this moment to shape a future of hope for all its people," he urged.
