Thousands of Palestinians displaced from northern Gaza are returning to the region for the first time since the early stages of the 15-month war between Israel and Hamas. The move follows agreements under the ceasefire terms, allowing passage to the heavily devastated area.
According to an official from Gaza's Interior Ministry, the crossings began along Al-Rashid Road through the western part of the Netzarim checkpoint, leading to Gaza City and northern areas of the strip. The French news agency AFP reported the development, marking a significant moment for those who have endured prolonged displacement.
Crowds of Palestinians, who had been waiting for days, began heading north early in the morning. The Associated Press noted that people crossed via the Netzarim corridor shortly after 7 a.m. local time (05:00 GMT).
The return process had been delayed for two days, with Israel accusing Hamas of altering the release order of hostages exchanged for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Meanwhile, Israel announced that six more hostages, including Arbel Yehoud, would be released as part of the ongoing negotiations.
This step marks a pivotal moment in the humanitarian and political dimensions of the conflict, as displaced families cautiously make their way back to an area still bearing the scars of extensive destruction.
