Kia Recalls Over 80,000 Vehicles Over Airbag Safety Concerns

Kia America has announced the recall of more than 80,000 vehicles in the United States due to a wiring issue that could lead to airbag malfunctions, raising serious safety concerns. The affected models include the 2023-2025 Niro EV, Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Hybrid vehicles, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Airbag and Seat Belt Malfunction Risks

The issue stems from damaged wiring under the front passenger seat, which could prevent airbags and seat belts from deploying properly during a crash. In some cases, it may even trigger unintended airbag deployment, posing an additional risk to passengers.

Free Repairs for Affected Vehicles

Kia has assured vehicle owners that dealerships will inspect and replace the faulty wiring if necessary. Additionally, they will reroute the floor wiring assembly and install protective covers—all free of charge. Kia will begin notifying affected customers in March 2025.

Second Major Recall in Recent Months

This marks Kia’s second recall in just a few months. In November 2024, Kia and Hyundai recalled over 200,000 electric vehicles due to a defective transistor in the charging control unit, which could cause power loss and increase accident risks.

While no crashes or injuries have been reported related to this latest recall, Kia advises affected owners to visit their dealership as soon as they receive a recall notice to ensure their vehicle meets safety standards.
