Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is set to visit Damascus on Thursday, marking the first visit by an Arab leader to Syria since the transition of power following the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December.
According to official sources, Sheikh Tamim will meet with Syria’s transitional leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, to discuss bilateral relations and ongoing humanitarian efforts. The visit underscores Qatar’s commitment to supporting Syria’s recovery and stability during its political transition.
Qatar has been a key player in providing humanitarian assistance to Syria, sending continuous aid shipments and reopening its embassy in Damascus last month after more than a decade. Doha has also engaged in high-level talks with the new Syrian leadership, including a recent meeting between Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and al-Sharaa.
Syria’s new government, led by al-Sharaa, has announced efforts to restructure the country’s institutions, dissolve armed factions, and draft a new constitution. Qatar has expressed its support for these transitional measures, emphasizing the importance of preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Sheikh Tamim’s visit is expected to focus on regional stability, economic cooperation, and Qatar’s role in Syria’s reconstruction efforts. The diplomatic engagement signals a shift in regional dynamics as Syria navigates a new political landscape.
