Hamas has confirmed the death of its military chief, Mohammed Deif, months after Israel claimed to have killed him in an airstrike on Gaza.
In an official statement, the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, declared the deaths of Deif and Marwan Issa, the group's deputy military commander.
“The Al-Qassam Brigades announce to our great people the martyrdom of a group of distinguished fighters and heroic commanders... commander Mohammed Deif, chief of staff of the Al-Qassam Brigades (and) commander Marwan Issa, deputy chief of staff,” the group stated.
Israel had accused Deif of playing a major role in planning the October 7 attack, which triggered the ongoing conflict. His death marks a significant development in the war, as Deif had been one of Hamas's most elusive figures, surviving multiple assassination attempts over the years.
Israeli officials have yet to comment on Hamas's latest confirmation.
This announcement follows months of speculation over Deif’s fate, with Israeli authorities claiming in 2024 that he was eliminated in a targeted airstrike. His confirmed death is expected to have a considerable impact on Hamas's military structure amid the continuing hostilities in Gaza.
