President Donald Trump will proceed with imposing aggressive new tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, the White House confirmed on Friday. The move, set to take effect on Saturday, reinforces the president’s commitment to his February 1 deadline for the duties, despite concerns over potential economic repercussions.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the decision during a press briefing, stating, “I can confirm that, tomorrow, the February 1 deadline President Trump put into place with a statement several weeks ago continues.”
In an attempt to negotiate a resolution, Canadian officials are scheduled to meet with White House border czar Tom Homan on Friday. Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that the meeting is aimed at reaching a deal to prevent the tariffs from taking effect.
However, when asked in the Oval Office whether Canada, Mexico, or China could take any action to halt the implementation of the tariffs, Trump firmly responded, “No.”
The White House’s confirmation effectively ends speculation regarding whether the president would fulfill his long-standing campaign promise to impose new trade duties. According to Leavitt, the tariffs will include a 25% duty on goods from Mexico and Canada, as well as a 10% tariff on Chinese imports. The administration justifies the measures against China by citing its role in the production and distribution of illegal fentanyl, which Leavitt claimed “has killed tens of millions of Americans.”
The decision is expected to have significant economic implications, affecting trade relations and potentially triggering retaliatory measures from the targeted countries. As the new tariffs take effect, businesses and policymakers will closely monitor the impact on international trade and domestic markets.
